The rise of customization and personalization across B2C and B2B markets is driving an explosion in product variants and configurations. This creates a critical challenge: effectively managing these variations throughout the entire manufacturing process to fulfill specific customer orders.​

For engineering departments, this means managing the lifecycle of product variants and configurations, especially in relation to change management. Concepts like modularization, product line engineering and Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) are gaining traction, along with the recognition that product variant and configuration management that links engineering to manufacturing, sales and service is essential. ​
